Bakery/Gingerbread

This week are starting learning about the theme "Bakery. The book "The Doorbell Rang" was a good book about bakery goods. It had a lot of math and problem solving to figure out about sharing delicious baked chocolate chip cookies.

In circle we brainstormed things we know about bakeries.

Our question of the day was "Do you like donuts with icing or without icing?" We asked each other the question and charted it. At the end we counted how many people like donuts with icing and without icing. We also talked about less and more, which number is more? Which number is less? This question lead to the language target of ordering using "with" and "without."

Puzzles are great for working together, putting pieces together and finding the colors of the puzzles that go together to make the picture.

JOURNALS: We drew what we would order at a bakery. Some friends chose cupcakes, birthday cakes, cookies, and donuts

In math we sorted beads into cupcake liners. Matching the number of beads to the number on the liner was great fine motor and one to one correspondence practice.

"The Gingerbread Man" was a good book to practice sequencing and repetitive line reciting.

SECOND STEPS:
In second steps we continued to talk about feelings. Ethan was surprised! The book he read popped up and surprised him. We are talking about paying close attention to the feelings of others by looking at their face and the situation.

We worked on coloring in the lines, counting, cutting and patterning\. We also played ABC bingo and said the letter sounds and words that begin with that letter.

This week we opened our bakery.  We took turns playing in our bakery. Someone had to be the customer and order and someone had to be the baker. We had to listen to the complete order of the customer such as: 2 cupcakes with icing and sprinkles, one donut with sprinkles, and 2 donuts without icing.

ART: The Otter class went to art today and zoomed us into Ms. Tara's class. We read "The Mixed Up Chameleon" and made our own chameleons.

MATH: We rolled dice and colored the number our dice landed on.

RECESS:

"The Gingerbread Boy" was a good book we compared to "The Gingerbread Man". We compared how the books were the same and how they were different.

"J" is our letter this week and we put jewels on the letter J.

Books are a great way to start the day!

SECOND STEPS: Emotions and seeing how friends and people feel is what we spoke about today in second steps.

We worked on sequencing, letter matching and cookie counting.

Today we made gingerbread bread and sugar cookie play dough. We used our measuring cups and measuring spoons.

In centers we played with dolls and doll houses and sugar cookie play dough we made!

We compared the 2 gingerbread stories we've read.

We watched "The Gingerbread Man" today and brainstormed J words.

Our gingerbread people turned out pretty cute! We added eyes, buttons and paint.

We practiced naming "J" words, dobbing the letter J, coloring in the lines, counting pies worksheet and even writing our own letter J's. We did Just awesome!

SCIENCE: We put gingerbread a cookie in water and predicted what would happen. (I think the gingerbread man will...)
Ask me what happened!

After the gingerbread cookie sat in the water, we touched it to see if it was soft or hard and what would happen to it. It started to dissolve.

MATH: cookie counting and gingerbread men were the math activities today. We counted chocolate chips cookies and matched to a number.  We also rolled a dice to see what parts of the gingerbread man we got to build.

This afternoon we read "The Gingerbread Kid Goes to School" and saw what a mess he made! Our gingerbread men ran away and we had to go around the school to find them!

Sugar cookie dough smelled so yummy! We used holiday cookie cutters to make our own sugar cookies!
