Grocery Store

Grocery store is our theme for this week. We talked about food groups, various foods in the groups and foods we like. We also brainstormed healthy vs. unhealthy foods. Below you'll see we sorted foods in groups of 'breakfast' 'lunch' and 'dinner'.

"The Carters Go To The Grocery Store" movie showed us different foods and where the foods are located at the grocery store.

Sorting foods into breakfast, lunch, and dinner categories.

The question of the day was "Do you like milk or orange juice?"

JOURNALS:
We drew our favorite dinner food. Chicken nuggets were Olivia's and Roman's, Matthew likes hamburgers and Shawn likes sausage pizza. We practiced drawing a picture related to a topic, telling about our drawing, and trying to write some sounds we heard.

In math we played environmental print bingo. Environmental print is signs or pictures that we see a lot of around our community. EI: Chuck e cheese, McDonalds, target,  goldfish snacks, crayola, m&ms, Walmart, etc.

Sand and sun, it's like summer!

Julianne did relaxing turtle time,  played tamborines, and showed a Veteran's day slide show. She showed us all the diverse types of veterans and people who served our country: Air Force, Coast Guard, Army and Marines. We saw Ms. Amy's cousin in the slide show who was in the Air Force!

Each student took turns looking at what they saw in the Veteran's Day book, we got to wave American flags also!

Ms. Amy did a book walk with us. The book was "The Scarecrow's Hat" and there were lots of animals in the book who wanted different things. Ask me what animals wanted to switch for other items.

TUESDAY: This morning we colored grocery coloring pages. We really worked on writing utensil grip, coloring in the lines, and labeling the food.

SECOND STEPS: Julia and Albert practiced asking for help. We learned different ways we can ask for help from an adult if we need help with anything.

We made a food collage and did food counting. One to one correspondence is very important at this age. We practice going slow and staying on task.

The fish room grocery store opened today. We had lots of shopping to do. We had to make a list, get a cart or basket, shop up and down the aisles and then check out. When we check out we had to choose paper or plastic bags and make sure we have money to pay for our groceries. Someone was the shopper/customer, the checker, and the bagger.

In math, we played "Grocery Store". We took turns practicing the question "Who has?" and we listed the item we picked from the pile then looked at our grocery list and had to match it.

What a beautiful day!

This afternoon we reviewed "The Scarecrow's Hat".

"S" is our letter this week. We made snakes for our S letter craft.

We talked about breakfast foods today made pancakes today. They were yummy! We had to follow lots of steps to make the pancakes. We used the words "first, then, next, and after".

Matthew and Olivia worked hard on recalling the characters from "The Scarecrows Hat" and sequencing the items of what animals wanted from other animals.

"The Hungry Thing" a book to practice nonsense rhyming words.  Ask me what the Hungry Thing Ate :) (hookies=cookies, feetloaf=meatloaf, smello=Jello)

"S" is our letter this week so we brainstormed some words that begin with /s/!

THURSDAY: This morning we practiced saying "her and his" and sorting in the correct cart. Olivia and Matthew took turns saying what food item they wanted in his or her cart. They were even choosing 2 and 3 items to make sentences longer.

Ms. Erin wrote our past tense book about making pancakes with us. We practice telling the steps of what we did by using regular and irregular past tense.

We colored pictures for our veterans. THANK YOU VETERANS! Ms. Julianne made a new slide show about veterans we watched also.

SECOND STEPS: Today we continued talking about using a loud, respectful voice towards a teacher when we need help. The girl in the photo needed help zipping up her coat and we brainstormed who she could ask for help and what she could say. Olivia and Matthew practiced zipping up each other's coats.

Ms. Erin read the peanut butter and jelly book to us. We looked at the steps of how to make a peanut butter and jelly sandwich and practiced using future tense (will)

Olivia and Matthew took turns spreading peanut butter and jelly.

Great job trying the peanut butter and jelly sandwich. If you don't like that's okay, just take a bite and put it on your plate.

In math, we patterned fruits and dessert foods. We are practicing ABAB, AABB, ABBA, and ABC patterns.

Outside we helped our Fox friends build a track for balls with pipes.

"Green Eggs and Ham" was a good book and helped with our rhyming word practice. "S" words were fun to figure out and place on our "S". We really had to listen to beginning sounds.

FRIDAY:
Roman, Olivia, Matthew and Ryan worked hard on their lego building.

November is a good month! We love talking about fall, the leaves changing colors and different foods.

Ryan and Ms. Amy had show-n-tell today. Ms. Amy had Garrett's cheddar and caramel popcorn and Ryan brought a plane!

This morning we made a dinner food, pizza! We read a book about all the steps in making a pizza then we each got to make our own pizzas. We added sauce, cheese and pepperoni. Some of liked it, some of us didn't like it so much.

Matthew and Roman loved watching the construction in the back of the 5th grade center.

In math, we sorted foods into the correct food group.
